Two Seconds to Save a Life

With just 2 seconds of warning, a collision avoidance system can prevent most crashes by using forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and more.

Reading the sentence - Just two seconds can save a life – takes about two seconds. And that, according to leading insurer AXA, is all the warning drivers need to prevent almost all forward collisions.

According to the US National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 80% of collisions involve some level of driver inattention in the prior three seconds. And while we’d like to think drivers can be completely focused all the time, that’s an unrealistic goal.

Fortunately, this is where technology can play a critical role. Collision avoidance systems (CAS) provide real time alerts, identifying potential hazards such as a vehicle or pedestrian ahead or unexpected lane departure. These alerts allow drivers to refocus within that two second window and avoid or mitigate the danger. In fact, according to the Boston Consulting Group, this could prevent 30% of collisions.
